BLAIRGOWRIE DOUBLES THE ORDER OF THE DAY
BLAIRGOWRIE DOUBLES FOR BATES, DONNELLY & CLARK

Despite a fresh breeze the sun shone on the Bogles Field for the annual Blairgowrie Highland Games.
There was some good competition on the track & in the heavy events, because of an area of soft ground the main arena was situated some 20 metres nearer to the main entrance side of the field.This however didn't deter from the performances of the athletes.
The Open 90 metres was run in three heats with winners Mhairi Henderson,TLJT, Sarah Ross, Pitreavie AC and Liam Halliday Central AC being joined in the final by fastest losers Colin Bruce, Selkirk and Cumbie Bowers, Glenrothes. On a slightly downhill track it was Sarah Ross who held on to take the tape and £100 prize in 9.39 seconds from the rapidly closing Liam Halliday and Cumbie Bowers who were 2nd and 3rd.
There was also three heats in the Youth's 90 metres handicap, and there was another female winner with Rhianna Sterricks, Leithenburn breaking the tape in 10.20 seconds ahead of Thomas Martin, Selkirk and Natasha Turnbull, Peebles. Samantha Turnbull, Peebles and Richard McKay, Kelso made up the 5 runner final.
There was a good finish to the Open 200 metres handicap with Fraser Neil, Kelso who was just shaded out of winning his 90m heat powering down the home straight to take the victory in 19.95 seconds, Liam Halliday was once again runner up and Kevin Wilson, Kelty who was making a comeback after a long spell out, in 3rd, Cumbie Bowers was 4th and Billy Martin 5th.
The Youths 90 metres was an all Borders affair with victory going to Thomas Martin, Selkirk in 21.36 seconds, he was followed over the line by backmarker Craig Gillan, Kelso, next in 3rd & 4th came Leithenburn duo Jess Wodehouse and Anna Forstyh with Richard McKay 5th.
The Open 400 metres handicap was won in fine style by Connor Henderson, Glasgow City in 49.52, there was a photo for 2nd and 3rd places with Cumbie Bowers just pipping Kevin Wilson.
The Open 800 metres produced another exciting finish with the ever consistent Willie Bates Tullibody overhauling Mike Murdoch, Glenrothes in the last stride, the elusive first win on the circuit still eludes the Fifer who has had to settle for minor placings on numerous occasions this season, Connor Henderson running from the backmark finished strongly for 3rd place.
The Youth's 800 metres resulted in a Selkirk 1 - 2 with Fraser Wheelans taking the tape in 1m 55.86s ahead of his training companion Zayna Aziz with Scott Douglas, Forfar in 3rd place.
Willie Bates went on to land a double with victory in the 1600 metres and who was 2nd, yes, Mike Murdoch again with Sam Bates, Tullibody in 3rd place. Dean Whiteford, Innerleithen who is chasing points in the SHGA league was in a challenging position when having to pull out through injury.
Games debutant Bailey Scott, Selkirk ran a good race to win the Youth's 1600 metres in 4m 28.72s, Craig Angus, Leithenburn and Zayna Aziz chased him home in 2nd & 3rd.
The evergreen Colin Donnelly, Lochaber landed a long distance double, after coming home a comfortable winner of the hill race he went on to win the 3200 metres handicap in 10m 15.50 seconds, Donnelly was also the winner of these two events at last years games. once again Mike Murdoch was runner up with Sam Bates in 3rd.
The roughish terrain of the Bogles Field track is not the favourite of the bikers, this didn't deter the six riders who were in action from putting on a good show for the crowd with some exciting finishes. Steve Jackson, Glasgow took the opening 800 metres before Alan Clark, Thurso went on to do the 1600m and 3200m double, the final race , the Deil tak the Hindmost saw James Melville edge out Steve Jackson by half a wheel length. There were only 2 competitors in the two Youth races, both were won by Marco Caira from Markinch, Liam Halliday, Denny who normally performs on two feet borrowed Davie Mathieson's bike to sportingly give Marco some competition after making the journey up from Fife.
