St Andrews attracts quality entry writes Shane Fenton

This Sunday's St Andrews Highland Games has attracted the biggest entry of athletes on the circuit this summer. The Station Park venue in the shadow of the Old Course Hotel is always popular with competitors and spectators alike. What is encouraging is the numbers and the quality of the runners declared for the distance events.Recent Thornton winner Luke Traynpr heads a big field of winners on the circuit already this season in the 800m,1600m and 3200m including Robert Sparks,Matthew Turner,Ewan Dyer,Fraser Neil,Edouard Lecrivain,Rory Muir,Alex Carcas,Kobe Stevens among them, the female challenge will come from the likes of last years winner Rebecca Burns,Natalie Sharp and recent Tour of Fife winner Sheena Logan.

The Open 90 metres which carries a top prize of £200 will be run off in six heats, a strong Borders contingent includes recent CERF and Markinch winner Douglas Young,Kelso.

The Youth athletes are also well catered for with races over 90m 200m,,800m and 1600m.

As has been the case at most games this season a good field of bikers are set to contest the 4 races on the card,, a few of them will be making the long haul down from the far North after having competed at the Halkirk games on Saturday. The youth bikers will have three races.

With no other games in opposition this year a bumbper field of competitors are lined up to contest the heavy events which feature seven disciplines and overall prizes. Add in highland dancing ,solo piping, visitors and childrens races and pipe band and an afternoon of action packed family entertaiment is in store. Fingers crossed the weather is slightly better than what is currently forecast!
