SHANE FENTON REPORTS FROM THE NORTH INCH

There was some excellent competition in front of a crowd in the region of 6000 at Sunday's Perth Highland Games on the North Inch.

Undoubtably the highlight of the day was the two long standing Perth Games records that were broken by man of the moment Scott Rider.

The Englishman who has won both the World and British heavy event championships this summer and is one of the leading shot putters in the UK smashed the 22lb shot putt record which was held by former Olympian Geoff Capes. Scott's putt of 49' 8'' was 9.5 inches further than the record set by his fellow countryman in 1981.

Rider also erased the 28lb Weight for Distance record which was set back in 1978 by Hamish Davidson, his throw of 86' 2'' was 11.5 inches further than that recorded by the former Scottish Shot Putt champion. In all Rider won 6 of the seven events on the North Inch, the one which eluded him was the 56lb Weight for Height which ended in a three way tie between Sebastian and Lukasz Wenta, Poland and Lorne Colthart Blair Atholl..

There was a fine days racing on the track in both the running and cycling events with some close and exciting finishes.

The 90 metres Scottish Championship was won by former New Year Sprint winner Martyn Paterson, Central AC who edged out Scott Richardson, Jedburgh AC in 10.72 seconds.

The £200 prize in the 90 metres handicap went to Fifer Glenn Murray from Cairneyhill who overhauled Martha Douglas, Jedburgh AC and veteran Tommy Finkle TLJT in the shadow of the winning post in 9.60 seconds,

Craig Bruce, Selkirk who won the big sprint the previous week at the Strathallan meeting found success again this time in the 200 metres handicap holding off Luke Lowther, Jed AC and Tommy Finkle in 21.03.

There was a dramatic finish to the 400 metres handicap with the lead changing hands three times in the last 10 metres of the race, Ross Friel, Glenrothes looked like claiming the victory, however with the petrol running dry the challenges were coming on both sides of the Fifer from backmarkers Martyn Paterson and Callum McWilliams, Giffnock AC, with both out on their feet, Paterson momentarily edged ahead, however as the line approaced McWilliams looked to have won the battle only to unluckily trip and fall a couple of strides from the line enabling Paterson to take the prize in 48.56s.

McWilliams however gained ample consolation by taking the £80 winners prize in the 800 metres handicap ahead of the in form Wallace McGown, Sauchie with backmarker Colin Welsh, Kelso in 3rd.

SHGA distance league leader Dean Whiteford, Innerleithen was again in the winners circle following his win in the 1600 metres handicap, Rory Muir, Dundee Hawkhill timed his run to perfection to win the 3200 metres handivap, Rory is the brother of Laura who is running for GB in the World Championships in Moscow.

Frontmarker Sinead Steel, Crossgates was the victor in the Youths 90m handicap with Borderer Josh Abbot, Kelso the winner in the Youths 200m handicap.

Both the Youths 800m and 1600m handicaps were won by frontmarkers, Adam Canavan, Bannockburn won his first ever race with an all the way win in the 800m with Ruaridh Britton, Leithenburn RC leading from gun to tape in the 1600m

The under wheel conditions were ideal for the cyclists and they produced some exciting races for the big crowd. The 1000 metres Scottish grass track championship was won by Craig Hardie, Dalgety Bay who went on to land a treble with wins in the 4800 metres and Deil tak the Hindmost. The other two races on the card, the 1600m and 3200m went to Dougie Shaw, Edinburgh, the latter is having an excellent debut season on the circuit.

The red shirts of Elgin were the victors in the Tug o' War with Moffat Builders runners up and Strathardle third.
