The Recreation Ground provided a fitting finale to the 2013 Games season, an appreciative and enthusiastic crowd of around 6000 surrounded the arena cheering every stride, jump, throw and wheel turn of the athletes and cyclists. For most of the afternoon they were bathed in warm autumnal sunshine.
No where else on the circuit do the crowd interact with the competitors like they do at Pitlochry, from the opening inter-schools relay-which was won by Pitlochry- to Allan Hamilton encouraging each and all to clap him up in each of his jumps as he attempted a new record, to every throw of the shot, hammer and caber by a quality field of heavy event competitors.
There were big entries for all the track and field competitions, the new event on the programme, the Scottish Junior Jumps Championship proved popular with Ben Coates of the Mid Argylle Club taking the overall title and SHGA Championship medal.Andrew Hunter, Clydesdale was runner up with Ewan Bradley, Inverness in 3rd place, a total of 13 competitors took part in the competition.
Entries for the Scottish Athletic Clubs junior relay championship have been increasing year on year, this year heats had to be run. It saw the team from East Kilbide AC retain their title coming home ahead of Innerleithen Runners and Clydesdale AC [A] team.
Running at his local games, Craig Robertson Pitreavie AC had a day to remember beating good fields from the backmark in both the 400m and 800m handicaps as well as winning the SHGA and Championship of the Highlands 1600 metres title for the 5th year in succession.
The biggest track prize of the day goes to the winner of the Open 90 metres Handicap and that was Amy Clancy[18m] of Peebles, who had to overhaul fellow female athletes Wendy Nicol[29.5m] and Victoria Stephens[22m] who was runner up, as well as holding of the late surge from backmarker Alan Hamilton[3m] who finished 3rd.
The 200m final had to be re-run after a pipe band had encroached onto the track in front of the runners, the second running produced the same winner with Ian Douglas, Selkirk taking the tape in 20.48 seconds.
Selkirk runners won both the 1600m and 3200m handicaps with Rowan Marr who runs for Lasswade AC taking the 1600m with last weekends Blairgowrie winner John McLean taking the 3200m.
Boosted by the those running in the junior relays the Youth races saw the biggest fields of runners on the circuit this summer, there were 8 heats in the 90m where Briony Paterson Leithenburn RC emerged victorious in 9.60 seconds.
Both Chloe Mason, East Kilbride AC and Darren Dolan, Clydesdale AC were impressive winners of the respective female and male Youth 400 metres handicaps. It was a sight to behold for the crowd seeing the diminuatie Dylan Thomson, Pitreavie AC emerging from a field of 25 runners to win the Youth's 800 metres Handicap.
Allan Hamilton caught the attention of the crowd with his exploits in the jumping events, clapping him up to all his jumps, the focus had been on him possibly breaking the Scottish High Jump record having gone close in recent weeks, however underfoot conditions had turned slightly softer and in places slippy, so that scuppered his chances, he still won the event however with a jump of 6'3''. He did give the crowd something to cheer however in the Triple[Hop-Step-Leap] Jump as he set a new ground record of 49' 4'' eclipsing the previous best of 48'9'' set by Mark Parham 24 years ago in 1989.
Edinburgh rider Dougie Shaw has had a great debut season on the games circuit and that continued at Pitlochry where he won three of the four races on the card, 10 cyclists were in action with Shaw winning the 800 metres handicap, 3200m Championship of the Highlands and the Deil tak the Hindmost, Steven Fletcher, Grantown on Spey was the victor in the 1600 metres handicap. Dylan Lindsay, Glenrothes did the double in the youths cycling winning both the 800m and 1600m races.
A big field of heavy event competitors thrilled the crowds all afternoon, most have been in action from day one on the circuit back in mid-May and will have competed at in the region of 30-40 different games, despite tiredness and aching limbs beginning to take their toll they continue to produce a high level of performance for the watching crowds. The outcome of the overall competition was a tie between Lorne Colthart, Blair Atholl and Craig Sinclair, Drumoak with Bruce Robb, Oakley third and Lukasz Wenta fourth.
