NEWBURGH UNDER-ORDERS FOLLOWING A 5 YEAR BREAK writes Shane Fenton

After a gap of 5 years Newburgh is all set to rejoin the Highland Games circuit tomorrow[Sat 20th June].

The Games, which were last held in 2010 have had their share of misfortune with cancelations' owing to bad weather, water logging and lack of volunteers.

However, it's all systems go for tomorrow at Robbie's Park and  the forecast is also looking favorable. The organizers called for support from spectators and competitors alike, the latter have certainly rallied to the call with a good entry from the runners and an excellent entry from the cyclists.

The running entries feature many athletes who have been winners on the circuit this year already, Markinch sprint winner David Brand Pitreavie AC will be backmarker in the 90m handicap, other Markinch winners among tomorrows entries include Marcus Archer who won the 400m as well as 800m winner Carl Fuhrmann Banchory Stonehaven AC,1600m winner Tyler White Pitreavie AC and Davy Rae, Hawick the vets sprint winner.

Blackford 800m winner Corey Smith Pitreavie AC along with double Cupar winner Michael Burns are also on the start lists along with Glenrothes duo Billy Martin and Cumbie Bowers who were 1st and 2nd in the 90m at Glamis Castle last Sunday. Gordon Barrie Dundee Hawkhill had a dream start to his highland games career with a treble last week at Glamis he is down to contest the 800m and 1600m.Ewan McCombie Edinburgh who won the 200m the last time the games were held in 2010 is also declared,

Kieran Halliday Central AC will run from the backmark in the youth races.

The cycling entry is the biggest on the circuit to date with 13 entered in the Open races and 8 in the Youths. The Open bikers contest 5 events including the Scottish 4800 metres Championship whch was last won by now retired Brendan Roe. The Youth bikers have 3 races including the Scottish 800 metres Championship.

A good field is also anticipated for the heavy events. All the action gets underway at 12.30pm.
