Invercharron all set for league deciders

Shane Fenton previews the last games of the season

Invercharron Highland Games which takes place on [Sat 19th] up at Bonar Bridge in Sutherland may not be the biggest or most famous of games held during the season.

However, invariably, it is the results from these final games which determines the outcome's of the season long SHGA leagues.

Once again that will be the scenario, and it leaves athletes and cyclists in a state of perplexity as to whether they should make the long trek North. And from what i was hearing at Pitlochry last week more competitors than usual are hoping to make the trip.

Unbelievably, after nearly 60 games and 500 competitions only 20 points seperate Lukasz Wenta and Lorne Colthart in the Heavy events league, last year at this stage Lukasz held an 11pt advantage and went on to take the title by 8pts. This time it's Lorne who is in pole-position.

With the athletic events all being scratch races, only 2 points are available for the winners only, however it's only 2 points which seperate 4 athletes for the 2nd ,3rd and 4th places in the Open 90m-200m league.

In the Open cycling, Craig Hardie leads James Melville by 6 pts with Charles Fletcher only 9pts behind in 3rd, and with the cycling handicapped it's all to play for on 2 wheels, as it is in the Youths cycling where Kyle Cartmel leads Marco Caira by 5pts. The top 2 places in the jumps leagues are confirmed, however 4pts seperate Sam Lyon, Ewan Bradley and Michael McGillvary for 3rd,4th and 5th.

There is an impressive list of events, on the track there's a 90m-200m-400m-800m and 1600m as well as a relay and a hill race which carries a 1st prize of £300. The bikers have 4 races, the jumpers have the usual Long, Triple and High and also a pole-vault, Invercharron being one of only 2 SHGA games to carry on that tradition, the other is at Tain.

Expect a good turn out of heavy event competitors with some of the best prize money on the circuit on offer.

The Tug o War teams are well catered for, again good money up for grabs in the various weight categories.
