INVERARAY ENJOYS RECORD TEMPERATURES

Inveraray Highland Games enjoyed the hottest weather of the Highland Games, not only for this season but for many a year.Temperatures in Winterton Park within the grounds of Inveraray Castle were nudging 29c in mid-afternoon.

There was a double-figures field for the heavy events which included the World Caber Tossing Championship.Results to follow.

In what was probably a first on the games circuit was that the cyclists outnumbered the runners.

The Open 90 metres saw victory go the Ben Coates from Oban who crossed the line in 9.95 seconds, Lee Goodfellow,Earlston finished runner up with Graeme Armstrong,Edinburgh in third place. Goodfellow had to settle for the runners up spot again in the 200 metres where victory went to front marker Armstrong in 22.54. David Allan,Balloch took third place.

The 400 metres saw Kyle Potts,Hawick win from the backmark in 53.36 seconds from Allan and Armstrong.

Greg Walker,Hawick landed an 800 metres - 1600 metres double, in the 800 he crossed the line ahead of Rory Anderson,Hawick and Kyle Potts in 2:08. The first two were the same in the 1600 with Stewart McGeachie, Campelton in third with the winners time 4:45.61.

After an exhausting day of contesting every running and jumping event Rory Anderson was rewarded with victory in the 3200 metres handicap, in what was probably the race of the day Anderson just got the better of Stewart McGeachie in a sprint finish which brought the sun-kissed crowd to their feet.

There was an excellent turn out of eight cyclists, more than which has attended most weekend meetings this season so far. Paul Gallacher,Kirkcaldy completed a double with victory in both the 800 metres and 1600 metres handicaps, Ian Hepburn,Cairneyhill and Stevie Jackson,Glasgow took 2nd and 3rd in the 800 with Jackson and James Melville,Dumbarton filling the minor berths in the 1600. Davy Mathieson,Newburgh made good use of his front mark to win the 3200 metres with Gus Gillies,Peebles and Charles Fletcher,Grantown on Spey following him over the line. Lewis Champion,Braco took the honours in the Deil with Fletcher second and Gillies third.
