BUSY WEEKEND BECKONS ON GAMES CIRCUIT writes SHANE FENTON


It's a doubleheader weekend on the SHGA circuit with Cupar Highland Games as well as Bearsden & Milngavie Highland Games on Saturday with the Strathmore Highland Games at Glamis Castle on Sunday.

Duffus Park is the venue for the Cupar event, following a parade of officials from the town's Bonnygate car park there will be a full programme of track and field events as well grass track cycling. The games also stage wrestling, highland dancing, childrens events, trade stalls, amusements and a licensed marquee. Action gets underway at 12 noon.

Following a blank year in 2014 the Bearsden & Milngavie Games are back on the SHGA schedule. The venue is once again Burnbrae the home of West of Scotland R.F.C. There is no track athletics but the games stages a 10k road race, heavy events. pipe bands, highland dancing and wrestling. Chieftain for the day is Emmerdale's Chris Chitell.

The action moves to Angus on Sunday for the Strathmore Highland Games which takes place within the palatial surroundings of Glamis Castle.

 

There is a full programme of Open athletics, 90m,200m,400m,800m,1600m and 3200m with a 90m and 1600m for the youths. The cyclists have five races from 800m to 8000m. There is a full programme of heavy events, the games also stages the British Tug o War Championship a pipe band contest, highland dancing and solo piping. The action gets underway at 12.30pm.
