BLACKFORD ALL SET TO GET NEW SEASON UNDERWAY writes Shane Fenton

The 2017 SHGA season for track & field competitors is all set to get underway this weekend with the Blackford[Perthshire] Highland Games on Saturday[27th May] and Carmunock Highland Games on Sunday[28th],

On the athletics side, the latter always has a strong heavy events competition for the throwers, while Blackford has a full programme of running, cycling, heavy events, tug o war and jumps, the latter was only introduced last year with high and long jump, it proved to be a success and triple jump has been added for 2017.

Entries hint competition should be keen with top jumpers Tony Daffurn and Jordan Charters being joined by last years winner John Fleming, Scottish vets jumps gold medalist  Craig Sowerby and Inverness all-rounder Ewan Bradley.

All are entered in the running events so we will see this years New Year Sprint winner Greg Kelly and runner up Jordan Charters renew rivalry. There will be a full programme of track events for both Open and Youth runners.

Similarily for the cyclists where there is a double figure entry.

Last years heavy events saw ground records broken in both the 22lb hammer and 56lb weight for height by Scott Rider and Lukasz Wenta respectively, both have started the new campaign well with ground records at Gordon Castle last week. Blackford also stages the Scottish Tug o War Championship with Moffat Builders all set to defend their title.

Track and Field events get underway at 12.30pm.
