How we champion Highland Games to a wider audience:
- We played a major role in advising the government’s enquiry into Scottish indigenous sports, emphasising the key role of Highland Games
- Facilitate schools development: Mini-Highland Games competitions are now being piloted in some regions
- Raise awareness and discussion at national level about Games events, including articles and interviews in national & local press and radio
- Lobby at top level for Games – including discussions, consultation and meetings with the Executive and Scottish Government, and raising awareness of the role of Highland Games in meetings with the Ministers for Sport and for Tourism
- Highlighted the diversity of events at Games, from top-flight athletic competitions to family-friendly races for children
How we work with key partners to make a difference:
- Meet with the Scottish Sports Association, ensuring that Highland Games are ‘on the radar’ in major sports consultations
- Maintain a dialogue with SportScotland on behalf of our members, advocating the benefit of Highland Games as community and sporting events in a national context
- Work closely with Scottish Enterprise in a ground-breaking partnership to deliver tangible benefits to members – including this website redevelopment and the provision of event-management resources packs
Work in a new partnership with ScottishAthletics to bring Highland Games events to a new pool of athletes, exchanging best practices, cross-advertising, event promotions in their magazine and website links (audience of 9,000 athletes), plus making athletic clubs aware of the benefits of competing at Highland Games
Pro-actively engaging with the national press to place copy for Games and features early in the season for our members’ events
- Developed a good working relationship with VisitScotland to promote our members’ events, including a high profile in Homecoming2009
- Building our membership base – talking to potential members with a view to increasing our coverage, becoming a stronger voice for all Games
- Looking at the potential of broadening the Associate Member categories in the traditional sports and heritage arena. Increasing our influence and creating new cross-marketing opportunities for our members, working with a highly targeted audience for mutual benefit
Background:
The Scottish Highland Games Association is constantly working to increase the profile of Highland Games, in an environment where entertainment is becoming more complex and where consumers' expectations are rising all the time. The SHGA has no paid staff and all work is voluntary – if you are interested in getting more involved please contact the secretary.
