THRILLING COMPETITION AT BRIDGE OF ALLAN

Shane Fenton reports from the Wallace Monument

A crowd of in the region of 8000 were treated to some excellent competition at the Bridge of Allan Highland Games on Sunday.

Held in glorious sunshine the 161st Strathallan Meeting lived up to it's reputation as the leading athletics meeting on the games circuit.

The British Heavy Events Championship was a truly international competition with competitors from Poland, Iceland, Holland, Belgium, Australia and England who joined Scotland's top throwers Bruce Robb, Craig Sinclair, Lorne Colthart and Kyle Randalls.

The bookies favourite was Scott Rider from Kent who recently took the World title at Loch Lomond, and he didn't let his backers down winning 4 of the seven disciplines, finishing runner up in two and 4th in another for a total of 37 points to take the title.
Sebastien Wenta from Poland finished runner up with 26.5 points with his brother Lukasz joint third on 18 points with Craig Sinclair, Drumoak.

There was some exiting finishes on the track, the top prize of the day was the £600 for the victor in the 90 metres handicap, this went to Craig Bruce[16'5] from Selkirk, but only after the judges had to consult the photo finish equipment.

Border athletes won the two Youth's 90 metre events, Brodie Cowan, Jedburgh won the 10-12 age group with Eve Huxley, Innerleithen victorious in the older 13-15 category.

Wallace McGown, Sauchie produced his best performance of the season to land the 800 metres while former New Year Sprint winner Martyn Paterson produced a sparkling run to from the backmark to claim victory in the 400 metres.

Scottish hill international Christine Rankin, Kilbarchan turned in a strong performance to win the 1600 metres while in the 3200 metres Derek Scott, Hawick led from flagfall to tape.

Dougie Shaw, Edinburgh was the man in form on the bilkes with wins in both the 800m and 3200m, James Melville, Dumbarton took the 1600m with Craig Hardie, Dalgety Bay taking the concluding Deil.

Top Scot's jumper Tony Daffurn, Kilbarchan who had been competing down south on Saturday flew back up just in time to contest the Long and Triple Jumps, and the rush was worthwhile as he landed the double with David Watson runner up on both occasions.
