THOMSON NAMED SCOTTISH ATHLETICS  'MASTERS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR'

Glenrothes veteran athlete John Thomson who has been a regular on the Games circuit for over 30 years was in celebratory mood on Saturday evening after being announced Scottish Athletics 'Masters Athlete of the Year' at the associations annual awards dinner at Hampden Park.

Thomson has had an exceptional year competing in the M55 Masters category.

He kicked off with gold in both the 800 metres and 1500 metres events at the Scottish Indoor Championships at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, he replicated that at the British Indoors at Lee Valley before picking up a silver at the World Indoors in Budapest.

Outdoors he added to his medal haul with 1500 metres gold in the Scottish Championships at Pitreavie, it was then on to the European Veterans Championship in Izmir in Turkey where he picked up a silver medal in the 1500 metres and just missed out on a medal with a 4th place finish in the 800 metres.

It was not only at the Masters Championships that the Fife AC member excelled, Thomson continued to pick up prizes with regularity on the Highland Games circuit, another notable success came in the Markinch Miracle Mile a race run to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first 4 minute mile, last month in Wales he ended his season as he started it, on a winning note, with victory in the Cardiff Festival of Running Road Mile.
