British Masters medals for Games athletes

MASTERS MEDALS FOR GAMES ATHLETES writes Shane Fenton

John Thomson,Glenrothes and Colin Welsh,Kelso were in medal winning form at the British Masters Indoor Athletics Championships at the Lea Valley Athletics Arena in London.

Running in the M35 1500 metres Colin took the silver medal in 4:09.50 with victory going to Aaron Brown,Tipton in 4:07.16.

In the M60 1500 metres John broke clear of his 6 rivals on the last lap to claim the gold medal in 5:05.66, Steve Taylor,Trafford followed the Fifer over the line in 5:08.14 with Peter Mountain, Bristol & West in third place in 5:09.75.

John and Colin are both well known to the games circuit, Colin is the only athlete to have picked up the SHGA Athlete of the Year award on three occasions while John is the current SHGA Veteran Athlete of the Year and winner of over 100 races on the circuit.

At this stage i can't confirm about Colin but i know John will be heading to Torun in Poland at the end of the month to contest the M60 1500 metres at the World Masters Indoor Championship.

And as i write i am hearing John has made it double gold with victory in the M60 800 metres.

In the M60 60 metres former New Year Sprint winner Dougie Donald, Corby took the gold in 8.17 with Graeme Armstrong Edinburgh claiming the silver in 8.25, the lattter who has recently returned from a successful spell competing in Australia was also recording a PB.

Another former NYS winner Tony Bowman Leeds City took the M80 title in 9.92 and finished runner up in the 60 m hurdles in 11.86. Albert Eland, Seaton another New Year regular took silver in the M70 400 metres.
