AUSSIE DEBUT FOR SCOTS DUO writes Shane Fenton

Veteran Scottish athletes Graeme Armstrong and Wallace McGown will make their 2015 debuts on the Australian Victorian Athletic League circuit tomorrow [Sat 24th] when they compete in the Wangaratta Gift meeting.

Neither are strangers to the lucrative Down-Under circuit having competed there in recent years, including at the famous Stawell Gift meeting. The latter isn't on their schedule this time but they will be taking in a few meetings before returning to Scotland next month.

Both have been regulars on the Highland and Borders Games circuits for years  and both competed recently at the famous New Year Sprint meeting.

McGown from Sauchie has twice been the Scottish Highland Games Associations 'Athlete of the Year' while Edinburgh's Armstrong will be better known to many for his exploits on the football field, he is best known for the longevity of his playing career, which encompassed a Scottish record figure of 910 league appearances over a 26-year period between 1975 and 2001. Including cup matches, Armstrong is one of a select number of players who have amassed over 1,000 career appearances.

At the Wangaratta meeting both are entered in the Open 70m handicap as well as the 120metres and 300 metres Masters Handicaps, McGown also has an entry in the Open 400m Handicap.

Another Scot joining the Aussie circuit shortly will be the recently crowned Scottish Athletics 'Masters Athlete of the Year' John Thomson, the Glenrothes veteran has competed on the VAL circuit on numerous occasions in the past.

Thomson who has won in the region of 140 races on the Highland Games circuit will defend his M55 titles at the Scottish Masters Championships at the Emirates on the 1st Feb before setting off on another trip down-under.
