Athletes & cyclists all set for Blackford curtain raiser writes Shane Fenton

Athletes and cyclists wil go to their marks for the first time this season tomorrow with Blackford all set to stage the traditional pipe opener of the SHGA season which will see in the region of 60 Games take place all over the country between now and mid-September.

Blackford stages a full programme of events for both Open & Youth runners and cyclists with all the action taking place on the only 400 metres grass track on the circuit. The games also host the first SHGA Championships of the new campaign the British 56lb Weight for Distance and Scottish Tug o War. As ever there will be Highland Dancing competitons for all age groups.

On Sunday there will Games taking place at Carmunock and Blair Atholl, the Atholl Gathering will be taking place under SHGA rules for the first time and will feature Heavy Events,,Highland Dancing,Piping,Wrestling and family races. The action at Blair Castle gets underway at 10am with the march by the Atholl Highlanders at 1pm.

Carmunock Highland Games is predominantly a heavy events games and always attracts a strong field of throwers. The games kick off at 1pm and also features a Highland Dancing display.
